Hakata-ori is a type of silk fabrics mainly produced in the Hakata district of Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture.  In the Edo period, the Kuroda clan of the Fukuoka Province gave Hakata-ori as gifts to the Tokugawa shogunate.  Thus, the best of Hakata-ori is sometimes called “Kenjo’u Hakata” (Hakata as an offering).

Hakata-ori is densely woven and sturdy and known for its comfort when used as obi.

You can observe Hakata-ori weaving demonstrations at “Hakatamachiya Furusatokan” near Kushida Shrine.
