Se’ison-kaku was built in 1863 by the 13th lord of Kaga province, Nariyasu Ma’eda for his mother, the wife of the 12th lord Narinaga, as her retirement villa.  It is situated next to the Kenroku-en Garden.  The Nijo’u-jo’u Castle is powerful and masculine.  In contrast, this villa is elegant and feminine, full of flowers, birds and colors.

Each room is named after the plant or animal depicted in the lower panels of sho’uji sliding doors, such as “kame-no-ma” (turtle room), “cho’u-no-ma” (butterfly room),  “matsu-no-ma” (pine room), etc.
