The Gyokusen-in-maru Garden was originally started in 1634 by the third lord of Kaga province, Toshitsune Ma’eda, and remained there on the Kanazawa Castle ground at Gyokusen-in-maru until the provincial system was abolished.  It was a garden fit for a “daimyo’u” (feudal lord), which featured a path that goes around a pond in the middle.  The garden also sported stone walls surrounding it to make the landscape more three dimensional.

The garden was abandoned and lost during the Meiji period, but was later excavated and restored to its former state in March 2015.
