Kanazawa Castle was the residence for the Ma’eda family, the lord of the Kaga province during the Edo period.  It is located right next to Kenroku-en.  Sometime during the Meiji period, most buildings were taken down to make room for military installations.  After the second world war, Kanazawa University was located there until 1995.  Reconstructions are currently ongoing.

There are many turrets used in the construction of the castle.  Roof tiles were made of lead to make them lightweight in anticipation of snow accumulation during winter months – and to make bullets in emergency.  (The official explanation to the Tokugawa shogunate: “They make the castle look pretty.”
