五月は端午の節句・May is for Boys’ Feast

Japan celebrates Tango-no-sekku.  It is one of the five major feasts, and is also known as “Sho’ubu-no-sekku” (the Feast of Irises).  It is a feast celebrated on May 5 to pray for boys’ healthy and strong growth.  Many families with boys display a warrior helmet (kabuto) and carp banners (koi nobori).  It is also the time to close the ro, and switch to a furo.

Let’s review some seasonal “me’i“(銘) (names) for May appropriate for tea utensils (based on another blog available here (Japanese only).

(Alternate Names for May)

  • Satsuki (皐月)(the Month of Rice Farming – based on the ancient word “sa” meaning rice farming).
  • Sanaezuki (早苗月)(the Month of Rice Seedlings).
  • Fubukizuki (吹雪月)(the Month of Snow Blizzard; it is not actually snow, but white deutzia flowers are in bloom and when they are blown away in the wind, it looks like a blizzard).
  • Fubukizuki (吹喜月)(the same pronunciation but different Kanji characters, and yet probably means the same thing:  the Month of Deutzia Blizzard).
