軸飾り・Jikukazari

「軸飾り」は軸物を巻いたまま床に飾り,席入り後正客の所望で床に掛けることです。通常は席入り前に掛物を床に掛けますが、御宸翰(ごしんかん)や由緒ある掛物など特別の物は尊んでそのようにするのだそうです。

With “jikukazari” a scroll is placed in the alcove – still rolled up, which will be hung only after all guests are seated and upon the first guest’s request.  Ordinarily a scroll is already hung before guests’ arrival.  However, special scrolls, such as a letter handwritten by an emperor or other items of great history, are handled differently as a sign of respect.
