After all, this is not Japan.  There aren’t many flowers that are available locally and can pass as “chabana” (flowers for tea).  Incidentally, I found the other day that “princess flower” is known in Japan as “shikon nobotan (紫紺野牡丹),” and it is accepted as chabana.  Wonderful!  I hear it originated in Brazil – but it blooms everywhere in San Francisco (including our house) all year.

Shikon nobotan (紫紺野牡丹)” has purple petals and stamens, whereas (just) “nobotan (野牡丹),” which is a different variety, has purple petals but yellow stamens.
