Risshu’u begins around August 8, the fifteenth day after Ta’isho, and continues for 15 days until Shosho.  It marks exactly half a year since Risshun.  Speaking strictly in terms of calendar, it is now autumn, which lasts from Risshu’u to the day before Ritto’u.  In reality, however, summer heat during the day still persists.  There are numerous summer festivals throughout Japan.  Here in San Francisco, “Nihonmachi Street Fair” and other festival activities are held.

And Shosho begins around August 23, and continues for another 15 days until Hakuro.  “Shosho” means “abating or easing of the heat.”  The coastal United States is hit by hurricanes around this time.  It also happens to be a typhoon season in Japan.
