Kikuya Family Residence

These are “Kikuya Family Residence” and “Old Kubota Family Residence” in Hagi, Yamaguchi.  They are located on the same street in front of each other.  The street used to be the official road for the Hagi lords to travel to and from the Hagi Castle.

The Kikuya family, just like the Kumaya family, was an influential merchant as an official purveyor to the Hagi Province.  The first generation of the Kubota family came to Hagi from O’umi Province (today’s Shiga Prefecture).  He started his business as a kimono merchant, but the second generation switched to sake making.

They are both “machiya” (a merchant’s residence with a store front) on a grand scale, which lets us have a glimpse of how the magnates of the time used to live.
