Hiroyo O’o’uchi (1325-1380)imitated Kyoto in designing the city of Yamaguchi, which led to what is now known as “O’o’uchi Culture” (O’o’uchi Bunka).  His descendant, Yoshitaka O’o’uchi (1507-1551)favored the cultured/scholarly types over the military types, and generously spent to support noblemen and scholars.  In 1551, a vassal rebelled against Yoshitaka.  He managed to escape Yamaguchi, but in the end killed himself at Ta’ine’i-ji.

As a main hall of a Buddhist temple, this is one of the largest in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
