Mawaribana

At the Rikyu-ki tea event the Omotesenke Domonkai Northern California Region is scheduled to perform “Mawaribana” (flower round robin), and we practiced in anticipation.  We used a “sanju’u kiri hanaire” (a bamboo flower vase with three openings for flowers).  Other items needed are a flower stand, a small knife, flowers, a water pitcher for flowers, and a chakin.

It is one of the seven games of Shichijishiki, in which the host and guests take turns placing flowers in the vase.  I heard that the key is to avoid monotony: colorful flowers followed by subdued flowers; a voluminous arrangement followed by a simple one; etc.  That way participants can enjoy the transformation of the flowers.  At the same time, because flowers are arranged in an improvised manner, it requires participants’ minds to focus on the proceeding.  Some flowers not ordinarily suitable for tea rooms (such as flowers with thorns) are acceptable for “Mawaribana“.
