When we visited a Japanese garden “Ko’uko-en” (opened April, 29, 1992), which is located next to Himeji Castle, it was unfortunately raining – but that did not stop us from seeing a tea house “So’uju-an”.

The building was designed and supervised by Urasenke’s 15th Grand Master to evoke an image of a tea house of the old Edo Period and samurai residences of the day.

The lady who brought us tea mentioned that there are many tea practitioners in Himeji.  As a matter of fact, an exhibition and sale was happening at the time at a nearby department store featuring works by Master N., a Senke Jissoku lacquer artist (千家十職: the ten professional craftsmen dedicated to the Sen families).
