Tray with Ainu Pattern

The other day I ran across this higashiki by chance.  It was a commemorative gift of the 1977 ta’ika’i (conference) in Hakodate (Hokkaido).  It is made of walnut, and a traditional Ainu (an indigenous tribe in Hokkaido) pattern is carved on it.  Such distinct pattern highlights the simple wood tray.  Although an event nearly 40 years ago, it makes me wonder what transpired at the ta’ika’i.
