Ryu’ure’i at Consulate General’s Garden

As part of the 60th anniversary celebration for the Omotesenke Hawaii Chapter in February 2015, each of the Northern California, Southern California and East Coast Chapters hosted a tea gathering in the ryu’ure’i style (tea served at a table).  The gatherings were all at the garden of the Japanese consulate in Honolulu.

In the waiting area, there was a display of photographs provided by the Kyoto headquarters, chronicling the history of each chapter.  We went past the waiting area, and entered the garden area to be welcomed by a white tent to block out harsh sunlight and create a pleasant environment for ryu’ure’i (tea served in a table setting).  Tea utensils were items collected from around the world, not originally intended for Japanese tea ceremony but adapted as such.  Such practice is called mitate (deeming).  Please refer to kaiki for details.
