The Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin was the location of kencha (dedication tea) during the Omotesenke Hawaii 60th anniversary event in February 2015.  The event also commemorated the 70th year since the end of World War II.

The Hawaii Betsuin is in Honolulu, and belongs to the Jodo Shinshu (True Essence of Pure Land Buddhist Teaching) school whose head temple is Nishi Hongwanji in Kyoto.  Jodo Shinshu was founded by Shinran Shonin.

Kaga’i So’uryu’u-shi arrived in Hawaii for proselytizing in 1889, and the temple became the Hawaii Betsuin in 1906.  The Main Hall was erected at the present location in 1918, which now includes subsequent additions and modifications.
