February Practice Chaji

We had a practice chaji (tea event) for the second time.  Two months had passed since our last because in January we had hatsugama instead.

As before, we started with shoza (first seating) included seki’iri (guests entering the room), shozumi (initial charcoal preparation), kaiseki (meal), and kashi (sweets).  Guests leave the room for nakadachi, and reenter the room for goza (second seating) of ko’icha and usucha.  Gozumi (second charcoal preparation) was omitted.

The kaiseki meal was again a simple “ichi-ju’u san-sa’i” (one soup, three dishes) version.  But students were assigned to bring different items and to play different roles than the last time.

There still are a lot of things to learn – but everyone must be getting a little bit used to the steps, and it felt that the event proceeded a tad more smoothly than the last time.

A male student did the last shozumi.  Because the otema’e differs slightly, a female student did it this time.
