So’uji Yamano’u’e (1544-1590) was an influential merchant in the city of Sakai and a tea practitioner during the Sengoku and Azuchi Momoyama periods.  He was one of primary disciples of Sen-no-rikyu, from whom he studied tea for 20 years.  He also served Hideyoshi Toyotomi as a tea master, but in 1584, he angered Hideyoshi and was banished.  During the banishment, he served the Ma’eda family, and in 1586 he infuriated Hideyoshi again and fled to Ko’uya-san (Mount Koya).  Around 1588, he started copying and distributing his own book of secret teachings: the “Yamano’u’e no So’uji Chronicle.

Later he went east to Odawara and served the Ho’ujo’u clan.  In 1590, during Hideyoshi’s campaign to Odawara, he was permitted to see Hideyoshi at Rikyu’s intersession.  Hedeyoshi was inclined to hire back So’uji, but So’uji once again angered Hideyoshi as he remained loyal to the Ho’ujo’u clan.  He was beheaded.
