Go’u-hime” the Movie

Mr. Hiroshi Teshigawara, who directed the movie “Rikyu” also is the director for the movie “Go’u-hime” (based on the novel by Masaharu Fuji).

Although the main character is Go’u-hime, Mr. Teshigawara was motivated to direct the movie out of his desire to make a sequel to “Rikyu” and make it about Oribe Furuta.

Whether or not based on historical facts, the movie depicts the relationship between Go’u-hime and Oribe as friendly in the following way.

After Rikyu committed suicide at the order of Hideyoshi, Oribe Furuta, one of Rikyu’s seven disciples, became the tea master to Hideyoshi.  Go’u-hime in the movie affectionately calls Oribe “Old Man” and is portrayed as a hoyden.  Oribe, after siding with the Tokugawa side in the Battle of Sekigawara, was appointed as the tea master to the 2nd Sho’ugun Hidetada.  However, Oribe’s free-spirited pursuit of art forms clashed with authoritarian    I’eyasu, thus creating a rift between them.  Go’u-hime’s husband, Hide’i’e Ukita, was banished to a remote island for having joined the Ishida side of the battle.  Thereafter, Go’u-hime was sent to the Ma’eda family for house arrest.  Under the watchful eye of the Tokugawas, Go’u-hime could not be herself: a care-free princess.  One day she decided to host a tea event to memorialize Rikyu’s date of passing, and invited Oribe, Ukon and Sansa’i.  Under the pressure from the Tokugawas, it was ultimately only Oribe who visited Go’u-hime.

There were scenes that caused me to gasp as unreal, but once I convinced myself that it was after all a “historical fiction” (a fiction inspired by historical characters and events) I was able to focus on visually stunning and artistic cinematography, and appreciate the movie.
