Shozumi (Ro)

We did shozumi (initial charcoal preparation) with ro in connection with the “practice chaji” we had the other day.

After a couple of tries, we finally managed to get some charcoals going in a metal container (called ju’uno’u used for starting fire) to be used as starter pieces.  Considering it has been more or less one year since our last shozumi practice with ro, the otema’e itself went relatively smoothly.  It was “otokodemae” (otema’e in the style of men) this time.  How to handle utensils significantly varies for men and women.  At the next opportunity, we should have a female student do shozumi.

The incense case was a commemorative gift from last October’s Mie Tea Event.  They are large clam shells (hamaguri) with a tori’i gate and ocean waves painted.  The original painting was done by Jimyo’u-sa’i So’usho’u (the current Grand Master).
