総見院・So’uken-in

There was an opportunity to visit So’uken-in this fall while it was open to public for a limited period.

It is one of 22 “sub-temples” at Da’itoku-ji.  Hideyoshi Toyotomi built it in 1583 to commemorate the first anniversary of passing of Nobunaga Oda, who perished during the “Honno’u-ji incident.”  So’uchin Koke’i, Rikyu’s zen master, was the founding priest.

This temple is dedicated to Nobunaga Oda, and his family members are also memorialized.

A wooden statue of seated Nobunaga is on display in the main hall of the temple.  The statue is wearing the court  costume (a sign of his court rank) – but carrying a sword (a sign of his samurai status).  The description in the handout was on point: “The statue captures Nobunaga’s likeness well.  His eyes are bright and piercing.”

This is one of the two identical statues carved out of incense wood.  The other was cremated and its ashes were buried at the temple (in lieu of his actual remains – which were lost).

The “wabisuke” camellia at the temple is said to be 400 years old and is “the oldest living specimen” of its kind.  On the placard, it was noted that Rikyu gave Hideyoshi a clipping, which was planted here and grew into today’s tree.

The “chasen-zuka” is a memorial for chasen. or whisks.  The incense burner is shaped like a tea bowl, whereas the flower stands look like chasen.  Every year on April 28, a ceremony is dedicated to chasen (to thank them for helping us to make tea).
