A Lady Named Go’u-hime

Go’u-hime (Princess Go’u) (1574-1634) lived during the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo Periods.  She was the fourth daughter of Toshi’i’e Ma’eda, one of the Oda clan’s vassals.  In her early age, her father gave her up to be adopted by Hideyoshi Hashiba (later Hideyoshi Toyotomi), who was childless, to deepen the connection with him.  The princess is said to have been beloved by Hideyoshi and his wife, Nene.  Hideyoshi reportedly said to Nene: “Had Go’u been a man, I would have made her Kanpaku (Chief Minister of State).

In 1588, at age 15, she became the wife of Hide’i’e Ukita, the lord of Bizen Province (today’s Okayama Prefecture) and the Okayama Castle.  However, Hide’i’e sided with the West Alliance headed by Mitsunari Ishida, going against the East Alliance of I’e’yasu Tokugawa.  For that reason, after I’e’yasu’s victory, Hide’i’e was banished to a remote island of Hachijo’u with his two sons in 1606.

During Hide’i’e’s banishment, Go’u-hime relocated to live with her elder brother, Toshinaga Mae’da in the Kaga Province (today’s Ishikawa Prefecture), and awarded 1,500 koku (entitlement over land able to produce approximately 225,000 kg of rice) as “cosmetics allowance.”  At that time, Ukon Takayama, a famous Christian feudal lord, was living in Kanazawa as a guest.  Go’u-hime was reportedly baptized and took the name of “Maria.”  She sent Hide’i’e monetary support in secret for the rest of her life.

It is reported that Go’u-hime was frail, and became severely ill each time she delivered a child.  Hearing that it was caused by a fox possessing her, Go’u-hime’s adoptive father, Hideyoshi, reportedly sent a threatening letter to Fushimi Inari (the headquarters of all Inari shrines dedicated to the fox god) that he would “kill all foxes in Japan unless Go’u-hime is dispossessed.”  That reaction is quite like Hideyoshi.

Mr. Hiroshi Teshigawara, who directed the movie “Rikyu” also is the director for the movie “Go’u-hime” (based on the novel by Masaharu Fuji).
