Akaji Oshidori Karakusamon Nishiki

This shifuku is made with a fabric called “akaji oshidori karakusamon nishiki” (arabesque pattern brocade with mandarin ducks/lovebirds in red).  It is for a cute, little nasu cha’ire (an eggplant-shaped cha’ire).

The fabric is copying a pattern that has been passed down in the Sho’uso’u-in.  A pair of mandarin ducks (lovebirds) symbolizes marital love and harmony since the ancient times.

When referring to the fabric pattern, it appears that the birds are mostly referred to as “oshidori” whereas in other contexts (such as a phrase: “eno’u-no-chigiri” or a vow of eternal love), it may be pronounced “eno’u.’

Because the shifuku is small, it took some efforts to locate a bird.  It was hidden down below.
