As promised before when we discussed “hoya ko’uro” (an incense burner) futa’oki, here is a note on “mitsuningyo’u” (three dolls) futa’oki.

AKA “sankanjin” (three idle men), “sankanjin” (three Chinese men), “santo’ujin” (three Chinese men).  (漢/kan and 唐/to’u are different Chinese dynasties – and in Japanese, they are often used to mean China.)

Of the three dolls, there is one doll that is different from the others.  The different one becomes the front.  For example, if there are one girl doll and two boy dolls, then the girl doll comes to the front.  Out of the seven futa’oki, it is relatively easy to handle the mitsuningyo’u futa’oki; there is no need to turn it over when using it.
