The marujoku (the round shelf) is back!  This week Mr. M did otema’e (tea making) for usucha (light tea) and closed with so’ukazari (full display).  Mr. T. tried his hand at “da’ikazari” (heavy tea is served using a temoku bowl pedestal)(see photograph).
Ms. S did a basic usucha otema’e with the marujoku.  Ms. A is off this week.  Ms. M is back from a break to do da’ikazari.  Mr. K, like Mr. M, was up for the usucha/marujoku/so’ukarazi combo.
Da’ikazari requires you to turn more often than usual!  Well, ladies will probably laugh at me for saying that – because they turn more often than men for ANY otema’e.  Men turn by doing “warihiza” (like horizontal scissor kicks while seated in the seiza (正座) position), grinding shins against the tatami mat.  Early on during the otema’e, no sweat.  But later, say around the time for ha’iken (= viewing utensils), it gets a bit shaky.  I try to maintain a brave face on the outside (yes, I am vain), but to be honest, IT HURTS to do it, especially when your legs are already on pins and needles….  Our teacher often says: “N*** So’usho’u (= one of the Grand Master’s direct students) is on a DVD.  Watch and learn.”  I have seen him do it on the DVD, and he GLIDES from side to side.  Wow.  Most impressive.
