This week, Mr. T and Ms. A practiced “Chasen Kazari” (one of the “Nara’igoto” disciplines) to serve “ko’icha” (heavy tea), Mr. M and Mr. K practiced “usucha” (light tea) otema’e (tea making) with a round paulownia shelf (“marujoku”). Ms. S practiced “nagashidate” (abbreviated otema’e in the ro season to serve tea quickly).

Later Shikata Sensei showed us how to view a “chatsubo” (tea leaf jar) in the “tsubo kazari” practice. We learned that the chatsubo is for storing new tea leaves (to be later ground into tea powder), and used in the “ro opening” season.Image
